Selecting Type

· First you must have created type with either the vertical type tool or the horizontal type tool. After you have done that, then you may select the type that you wish to delete, edit, etc.

· While having the type tool in use, you may click on any point in the word, line, or paragraph and then drag until you have selected the desired text.

· To make a more broad selection, you may double-click to select a word, triple-click to select a line, and quadruple-click to select the paragraph.

· To select all the type in a particular layer, you can double-click the T icon on your layers palette. This is useful when having different layers of type.

You can also move the type around in a particular layer by simply clicking and dragging with the Move tool.

Merging Layers in various ways; Flattening Layers

To merge layers:

· Click the upper layer of any of the layers in the layers palette

· Control>Right Click with your mouse and click merge down

· You obviously want to order your layers in the layers palette do decide on what you want and don’t want to merge

To merge visible layers:

· Make sure all the layers you want to merge are visible by clicking on the eye symbol next to your layer. If you can see the eye, it’s visible, if you can’t then it’s not visible

· Control>Right Click with your mouse and click merge visible layers

· To copy layers, simply choose the desired layer hover over it on your canvas, press Alt/Option and drag to create a copy

To Flatten Layers:

· Select all of your desired layers by making sure they are visible

· Choose any layer in the layers palette and press Control>Right Click with your mouse

Then go down to flatten image, where your image will become one background layer

Structure and Presentation:

Structural elements are things like paragraphs, headings, lists, and the like; presentation is how the text looks, including things like the font, font size, text color, and so on. Structure is about organizing the content on the page, and presentation is concerned with making the content look good.

To insert text:

  • In the design view, click on the page where you want to add text
  • Type the text you want

Selecting text:

Besides selecting text by dragging your mouse over it; here are some shortcuts

· Double-click on a word to select it

· Move your cursor to the left of a line of text until the cursor changes from an I-beam to an arrow pointing at the text. Then click once to highlight a single line; or drag up or down to select multiple lines.

· Triple-click anywhere in a paragraph to select the entire paragraph

· For finer control over selecting individual letters, hold down Shift key and press the left or right arrow keys to extend the selection one letter at a time

· Ctrl-Shift(Cmd-Shift) plus the left or right arrow key extends the selection one word at a time. Ctrl(Cmd) plus the left or right arrow key moves the cursor one word to the left or right.

· Press Cmd A to Select All

Cutting, Copying, and Pasting Text

To cut or copy text:

· Select the text you want to cut or copy

· To cut the text to the Clipboard, choose Edit>Cut, or press Cmd-X on the keyboard or…

· To copy the text to the Clipboard, choose Edit>Copy, or press Cmd-C on the keyboard

To paste plain text:

· Click to place the insertion point on the page where you want the text to appear

· Choose Edit>Paste, or press Cmd-V on the keyboard

Dragging and Dropping Text

To drag and drop text:

· Select the text you want to move

· Move the cursor over the selected text. The cursor will change from an I-beam to an arrow

· Click and hold your mouse button over the selected text, and drag it to its new location, releasing the mouse button when the cursor is where you want the text. The text moves to its new home.

Changing the canvas; cropping an image using the crop tool

To resize the canvas

· Choose Image>Canvas size or press Command>Option>C for the keyboard shortcut

· Choose your desired width and height and your desired form of measurement

· To position the image in a new spot on the canvas, click on the desired grey arrow you would like underneath the text options

· Click OK to finish

To crop an image with the crop tool

· Click the “Crop Tool”, which is the third box down in the left column of the toolbox area

· Click and drag the marquee over the desired image you want

· After you have chosen the box, you may reposition the pointer inside the box to create an axis. You may then rotate your image on this axis.

· You may also change the width and height of the image as well

· You may change the options palette for the crop tool at the top of the screen to your liking

· You can change the shield color by clicking and picking a color, you may also change the opacity to our liking

· Press the return key when done, and your new image will be displayed

If at all during the cropping process you feel to do so because you don’t like the idea to crop, press the escape key

Setting up the print size

· To bring up your “image size” dialogue box, press Cmd>Option>I

· Make sure “constrain Proportions is checked, to keep the image in proportion. If you want to, you may do whatever by unchecking it.

· The recommended resample image option is bicubic smoother for an enlarged image and bicubic sharper to lower the image size.

· Choose the desired width and height to your document.

Setting up the resolution of an image

· To change the pixel count of an image, check “Resample image”.

· To preserve the pixel count, uncheck Resample image and the size of the document will change accordingly.

· Then enter a Resolution. 72 being for low resolution things, higher for upper level resolution.

Opening a photo in Photoshop

· Click file, Open.

· Open a psd image.

Creating a new blank document

· Click file, new.

Choose the desired options, that simple.

Creating Photoshop files in Illustrator

· To start, simply create a design in Illustrator that you desire to use in Photoshop.

· Next, choose File, Export and you will get an information box in the middle of the screen.

· Give your file a name and save it under a Photoshop file (psd).

· Click export.

Then go to Photoshop and open up your file.

Using the Symbols Palette and creating symbols

· To bring up the symbols palette, press Cmd-Shift-F11.

· You may place any of the default symbols within the palette onto your art board by clicking and dragging.

· You may also create some sort of symbol or object on your art board and drag it to the symbols palette by clicking and dragging.

Use of the symbolism tools

· The “symbol sprayer” tool has 7 additional tools under its box. To access these click and hold on the little black arrow in the box until the other tools pop up on the right. The job of this tool is to create many symbols at once.

· The symbol sprayer will start to fill the diameter of it its spray shot as you click and hold, creating more symbols as you go on.

· The “symbol shifter” will pull the symbols towards your mouse direction.

· The “symbol scruncher” will pull all the symbols together tight.

· The “symbol sizer” will make the symbols larger or smaller according to your settings.

· The “symbol spinner” spins the symbols in any direction.

· The “symbol stainer” will create a tint of selected cooler on the set of symbols.

· The “symbol screener” will lighten your symbols.

Deleting symbols

To delete a symbol, click and drag it to the trash can at the bottom right of the palette. An alert box will pop up, simply push delete all instances to get rid of it.

Using the Paintbrush Tool

· Choose the paintbrush box or shortcut “B” to access your paintbrush.

· Press “F5” to show your Brushes palette.

· To draw open paths, draw freely. To close paths, press Option/Alt.

· You can fix your anchor points with direct selection tool.

· Note that having a fill will create a filled shape with the current color.

Preferences for the Paintbrush

· To access the paintbrush preferences, double-click on the paintbrush toolbox.

· The “fidelity” affects the amount of anchor points the line or closed path will have. Choose from .5-20 (.5 having many anchor points to 20 having less anchor points).

· Note that the more anchor points you have will affect the smoothness of your line.

· The “Smoothness” affects the irregularities in the path. Choose from 0-100% (0 being very smooth and 100 not so smooth).

Using the Brushes palette

· Press “F5” to access your brushes palette.

· To select different brush strokes and add them to your palette, click Window>Brush libraries and choose from there.

You can click the palette option bar>List view to display brush strokes as well.

Special Effects with Type

Wrapping type around an object or image

· Create an object (circle, rectangle, etc).

· Select the “Area Type Tool” under the Type tool box.

· Click inside the object with the “Area Type Tool” and create desired text.

· Then create an object or image you want the text to wrap around.

· With the object selected, go to the illustrator bar at the top, choose “object>Text Wrap>Make.”

· Then, with the object still selected, choose “object>Text Wrap>Text Wrap options.”

· Select preview and type in the desired space wanted between the text and the object, then click OK.

Creating shadows for point type (back shadow and front shadow)

· It’s a good idea to have the transparency palette out for this subject, (Cmd-Shift-F10).

· Select the regular point type tool and write the desired text on your artboard.

· Select the type with your selection arrow, and add a dark fill with no stroke.

· Option-drag (copy) the type slightly downward to the right.

· Select the new type and add a lighter color to it.

· On the top illustrator menu bar, choose “Effect>Stylize>Feather. Click OK.

· Select the opacity on your “transparency palette” to your liking.

To slant the shadow

· Select the shadow type with the selection tool and down.

· With the shadow selected, double-click on the “shear tool” (under the scale tool box).

· Enter “45” in the Shear Angle Field, click on the Horizontal axis, OK.

To reflect the shadow

· Select the type, double-click on the “reflect tool” (under the rotate tool box).

· Click Horizontal axis, OK.

Slanting type block

· Draw a rectangle using the rectangle tool.

· Choose the “Area Type tool” and click on the left edge of the rectangle, and create desired text.

· With the rectangle selected, double-click the “rotate tool”. Enter “30” in the angle field, OK.

· Deselect the object and select the “direct selection tool” under the selection arrow toolbox.

Then Shift-drag the top segment of the rectangle until the side segments are vertical.

Merging and Flattening Layers

· In illustrator, go to Layers under the Window menu, or press F7 to shortcut to your layers palette.

· “Layer 1” will be on your palette, you may create objects to put them on your 1st layer.

· To create a new layer, go to the bottom of your palette and select the 3rd box, “create a new layer”. Create objects you desire.

Merging Layers

· To merge layers, use Cmd-click to highlight the continuious layers. Be sure to click the on the layer you want to merge everything to last.

· Go to the little black triangle at the top right of your palette.

· Click on “Merge selected”.

Flattening Layers

· To make more room and/or flatten your artwork you can use the “Flatten artwork” command.

· This command turns all art into one top layer.

· To flatten layers, choose the selected layer you want everything to be on.

· Then go to the layers palette menu and click “flatten artwork”.
