Kerning, Tracking, Adjusting leading in a paragraph of type in Photoshop.

(Pg. 395-396)

Kerning:

· On the Layers palette, double-click a T icon.

· Click to create an insertion point between any two characters.

· Display the Character palette. (You can go up to Window, and then down to character).

· Choose Metrics from the Kerning pop up menu on the Character palette to apply the font’s built-in kerning.

· You can also drag left or right over the kerning icon located on the Character palette.

· Another way you can do it is by clicking where you want the kerning to occur, and hold down Alt/Option and press the left or right arrow.

Tracking:

· Works pretty much the same way as kerning, except with the tracking icon which is on the Character palette beside the Kerning icon.

Leading:

· You will want to type a paragraph first.

· Then double click on the T icon on the layer that you want to adjust the leading.

· Then click and drag on the leading icon located on the Character palette.

· For finer increments of leading, hold down Alt/Option while clicking and dragging on the leading icon.

Selecting Type

· First you must have created type with either the vertical type tool or the horizontal type tool. After you have done that, then you may select the type that you wish to delete, edit, etc.

· While having the type tool in use, you may click on any point in the word, line, or paragraph and then drag until you have selected the desired text.

· To make a more broad selection, you may double-click to select a word, triple-click to select a line, and quadruple-click to select the paragraph.

· To select all the type in a particular layer, you can double-click the T icon on your layers palette. This is useful when having different layers of type.

You can also move the type around in a particular layer by simply clicking and dragging with the Move tool.

Feathering Selections; dragging and dropping a selection between documents; copying and pasting selections; paste into a selection. (p. 138-142)

Feather Selection:

· With a selection active, right click/ Control click in the document window and choose Feather (or choose Select, Feather).

· Enter a Feather Radius value. The higher the doc resolution, the wider you need to make the feather radius. Click OK.

Drag and Drop a selection between Documents:

· Open the source and target documents, and arrange the windows so they don’t completely overlap each other.

· In the source document, create a selection, then click a layer or the Background.

· Choose the Move Tool. Drag the selection into the target document window, and release the mouse where you want the pixels to be dropped. Adding Shift will place the selection directly in the center of the target document.

Copy and Paste a Selection:

· Click a layer on the background, then create a selection.

· Choose one of the following commands: Edit> Copy Edit>Copy Merged or Edit> Cut

· Click in any document window.

· Choose Edit>Paste

· The pasted pixels will appear in a new layer.

Paste into a Selection:

· Select an area of a layer.

· Choose Edit> Copy or Edit> Copy Merged

· Leave the same layer active or click a different layer, or click a layer in another document.

· Select the area that you want to paste the clipboard contents into.

· Choose Edit> Paste Into

1. Click inside the paragraph you want to align.
2. Go to the top, choose Text, then Align, and then either left, center, right or justify.
3. Another way to do that is to go to Properties, at the bottom of your screen and choose either left, center, right or justify.

Indenting Text

1. You can indent by going up to Insert,
2. Then choose HTML,
3. Then choose the Special Characters submenu and click on non-breaking space.

Using the Start Page; Using the New Dialog Box

1. The start page is the starting point for both creating and modifying pages and sites. If you close all your open dreamweaver windows, the start page reappears.

2. Choose File, then New,

3. The New Document Dialog box appears

4. Set to General Tab

5. Click to choose one of the items in the category column

6. The second column changes to show available items for that category

7. Click the item you want in the second column

8. Click create

Dreamweaver creates the new document and displays it in a new window

· Select the text you want to color

· Click the color well in the Property Inspector, the color picker appears

· Click a color with the eyedropper to select it; it can be any color in the color picker or any color visible on your desktop or the page you are editing.

· When you select the color, the color picker closes and the text changes color.

Adding Line Breaks

· At the end of the line you want to break, press Shift-Return

· Or, at the end of the line you want to break, in the Text category of the Insert Bar, select Line Break from the Characters pop-up menu. The text then changes

Merging Layers in various ways; Flattening Layers

To merge layers:

· Click the upper layer of any of the layers in the layers palette

· Control>Right Click with your mouse and click merge down

· You obviously want to order your layers in the layers palette do decide on what you want and don’t want to merge

To merge visible layers:

· Make sure all the layers you want to merge are visible by clicking on the eye symbol next to your layer. If you can see the eye, it’s visible, if you can’t then it’s not visible

· Control>Right Click with your mouse and click merge visible layers

· To copy layers, simply choose the desired layer hover over it on your canvas, press Alt/Option and drag to create a copy

To Flatten Layers:

· Select all of your desired layers by making sure they are visible

· Choose any layer in the layers palette and press Control>Right Click with your mouse

Then go down to flatten image, where your image will become one background layer

Topic: Changing Font

In Dreamweaver you have the ability to set the typeface, or font, for any text on your page. However, because there are not fonts that are universal Dreamwever uses font families. These are combinations of fonts that allow you to provide several options for the browser to choose from when displaying your font. If the browser viewing your work ends up not having one of these choices installed then the browser will open with the default font of that browser. There are six of these combinations or font families. When choosing font size Dreamweaver is reminiscent of a word processor but with the font handling characteristics of HTML or CSS styles. You may apply several font sizes from the pop-up menu in the property inspector or you can change the units of measurement.

To set a font…

1. Select the text you want to modify.

2. Choose a different font combination from the font pop-up menu in the property inspector, or choose Text> Font and then choose the font combination from the sub menu.

-The text changes appearance

Tip…

Most of these font combinations are found on computers sold in both Windows and Macintosh from the past few years. Making these combinations a good choice because they are available on any computer, for the most part.

To set font size…

1. Select the text you want to modify

2. Choose a different size form the Font size pop-up menu in the Property inspector

3. Choose the unit of measurement you want from the units pop-up menu, next to the Font size pop-up menu.

-The text changes appearance.

Tip…

Some of the sizes listed in the Font size pop-up are relative sizes, meaning they set a font size to be larger or smaller relative to the default font size

Working with Lists – Setting List Properties

1. Click in the list you wan to change using the insertion point.

2. Choose text > List > Properties. The List Properties will then appear.

3. Do one or more of the following:

- In the “List type” pop-up menu, select Bulleted List, Numbered List, or Directory List (“definition list” is called “Directory List” in this dialog).

- In the “Style” pop-up menu, select one of the Bulleted List or Numbered List styles.

- Use the “Start count” text box to set the value for the first item in the numbered list.

4. Click OK.
