Layers

Creating and Deleting Layers and Folders

To add layers and folders:

· Choose Insert > Timeline > Layer or Layer Folder

· Or in the Timeline, click the Insert Layer or Insert Layer Folder button

To delete layers or folders:

· In the Timeline, select the layer or folder you want to delete

· Click the Trash icon

To delete multiple layers and/or folders:

· In the Timeline select the first layer or folder you want to delete

· Hold the command key and click on every layer you want to delete

· Click the Trash icon

Controlling Layers and Folders

To work with the Layer Properties dialog:

· In the Timeline, select the layer you want to define or change

· Choose Modify > Timeline > Layer Properties

Controlling Layer Visibility in the Timeline

To close layer folders in the Timeline:

· In the Timeline click the triangle to the left of the open folder icon

· To open it just click the triangle again

Controlling the Stacking Order of Layers

To reorder layers:

· In a document with several layers, in the Timeline, position the mouse pointer over the layer you want to move

· Click and drag the layer

· Position the preview line in the layer order you want, and release the mouse

The Library – Library Terminology, the Library Panel

The Library

§ View library’s contents

§ Allows you to organize symbols, sounds, video clips, and bitmaps in folders

§ Provides information when an item was last changed, what type of item it is, and how many times the movie uses it

§ Contains shortcut buttons and menus for working with symbols

§ Shortcuts for creating new folders, renaming elements, and deleting items quickly

Library Terminology

§ Asset – an item stored in a Flash library

§ Symbols – graphics created with Flash’s drawing tools and stored in a library

§ Font Symbols – fonts stored in a library

§ Sounds, Video Clips, and Bitmaps – Imported sounds, video clips, and bitmaps

§ Instance – Each copy of a library asset that you use in a movie

§ Common Library – A sort of library of libraries

Open the library of the current movie

1. Choose Window > Library. The library panel contains the libraries of all the Flash documents currently open on your desktop.

View the wide or narrow Library panel

1. In the open Library panel, click either the Wide Library View or Narrow Library View buttons.

Understanding Library Hierarchy

1. Open the Library panel

2. To select a location - add a root-level folder, select an item at the root level. To add a subfolder, select an item within the folder where you want to add the new subfolder.

3. To create the new folder – Click New Folder at the bottom of the window

4. Type a name for your folder

5. Press enter.

Working with library folders

1. In library panels, select a closed folder.

2. To open a closed folder, double-click the folder icon

3. To close the open folder, double-click the folder icon

Moving items between library folders

1. Select the item you want to move

2. Drag the selected item over the icon of the destination folder

3. Release the mouse button. The item moves into the new folder

Topic: Stacking Order and Alignment

Stacking Order pages 153-154 and 183

1. Stacking using layers

· In a document with many layers you click on the layer you want to move

· Drag to where you want the layer to go, a gray line should appear where you would like to drop the layer

· Release and the layer moves

· (You can also use folders to keep layers in order)

2. Rearranging object in a group

· Select the object you would like to move

· From the Modify>Arrange menu choose

-Bring forward

-Send Backward

-Bring to front (Brings the object to the very front)

-Send to Back (Sends the object to the very back)

Aligning Elements pages 90 and 155-156

1. Aligning Paragraphs

· Use the text properties tab of the property inspector

· Pick one of the options

-Align left, center, right, justify, top, or bottom

2. Aligning Elements

· Choose window > Align

· Select objects you would like to align

· Choose one of the options

-Align left edge, horizontal center, right edge, top edge, vertical center and bottom edge
