Adding Text – the difference between structure and presentation; selecting, cutting, copying and pasting, dragging and dropping

Page 83-87

Structure and Presentation:

Structural elements are things like paragraphs, headings, lists, and the like; presentation is how the text looks, including things like the font, font size, text color, and so on. Structure is about organizing the content on the page, and presentation is concerned with making the content look good.

To insert text:

  • In the design view, click on the page where you want to add text
  • Type the text you want

Selecting text:

Besides selecting text by dragging your mouse over it; here are some shortcuts

· Double-click on a word to select it

· Move your cursor to the left of a line of text until the cursor changes from an I-beam to an arrow pointing at the text. Then click once to highlight a single line; or drag up or down to select multiple lines.

· Triple-click anywhere in a paragraph to select the entire paragraph

· For finer control over selecting individual letters, hold down Shift key and press the left or right arrow keys to extend the selection one letter at a time

· Ctrl-Shift(Cmd-Shift) plus the left or right arrow key extends the selection one word at a time. Ctrl(Cmd) plus the left or right arrow key moves the cursor one word to the left or right.

· Press Cmd A to Select All

Cutting, Copying, and Pasting Text

To cut or copy text:

· Select the text you want to cut or copy

· To cut the text to the Clipboard, choose Edit>Cut, or press Cmd-X on the keyboard or…

· To copy the text to the Clipboard, choose Edit>Copy, or press Cmd-C on the keyboard

To paste plain text:

· Click to place the insertion point on the page where you want the text to appear

· Choose Edit>Paste, or press Cmd-V on the keyboard

Dragging and Dropping Text

To drag and drop text:

· Select the text you want to move

· Move the cursor over the selected text. The cursor will change from an I-beam to an arrow

· Click and hold your mouse button over the selected text, and drag it to its new location, releasing the mouse button when the cursor is where you want the text. The text moves to its new home.

Topic: Stacking Order and Alignment

Stacking Order pages 153-154 and 183

1. Stacking using layers

· In a document with many layers you click on the layer you want to move

· Drag to where you want the layer to go, a gray line should appear where you would like to drop the layer

· Release and the layer moves

· (You can also use folders to keep layers in order)

2. Rearranging object in a group

· Select the object you would like to move

· From the Modify>Arrange menu choose

-Bring forward

-Send Backward

-Bring to front (Brings the object to the very front)

-Send to Back (Sends the object to the very back)

Aligning Elements pages 90 and 155-156

1. Aligning Paragraphs

· Use the text properties tab of the property inspector

· Pick one of the options

-Align left, center, right, justify, top, or bottom

2. Aligning Elements

· Choose window > Align

· Select objects you would like to align

· Choose one of the options

-Align left edge, horizontal center, right edge, top edge, vertical center and bottom edge

Working With Text in Flash

Text as a graphic element:

· Select text tool

· See A icon

· Click where you want text to start

· Text box appears (resizeable)

· Type your text

· When finished, click elsewhere or change tools.

· Text box hides; only text is visible

Make a text box:

· Click to place a cursor with the type tool

· Move mouse to corners of box, drag box to desired width

· Text fills the box and will continue to expand vertically to fit this width

Selecting and moving text boxes:

· Use the Command key with type tool active to retrieve the Selection Arrow tool. Click and drag

Setting and changing text attributes:

· See the Properties Inspector (Window/palette) while type tool is selected

· Also see the Text menu for other options, including SPELL CHECKING

· See the Font Preview window that shows up when you change fonts. You get a sample of the font.
